Restaurant Spotlight: Put Reid’s on your radar for summer travel / Banner Elk, NC
Located 45 minutes from Asheville at the base of Grandfather Mountain in an area more known for heavy Southern favorites, Reid’s veggie-centric menu is as bright as their beet hummus.
Opened by local food champion Tina Houston in 1999, the popular, Banner Elk eatery has added a raw bar since I visited in 2021 to interview Houston. The restaurant primarily sources seafood from North Carolina, including oysters, fish, and shrimp.
With Banner Elk’s status as one of NC’s premier luxury mountain destinations, there is a lot of demand for fresh seafood, so distribution in the area is robust, despite the somewhat remote feel of the place. And you can get your raw bar fix without the crazy pricing that comes with dining at some of the more formal places in town.
